Make sure you stop to read the signs explaining things, you'll learn a lot. I can't imagine having been on that ship when it was in use. The whaling ship is gorgeous, truly a special piece of history. (Tip: Make sure you favorite that picture before it gets buried in your pictures of the museum!) I do wish they had printouts of the day's schedule instead of just telling you to take a picture of the sign. Make sure you check out the daily calendar to find out what demonstrations will be going on that day. The volunteers are well-informed, friendly, and happy to teach you something new. The "Museum" is active and alive, with regular demonstrations of things like their mid-1800s blacksmithing shop, their original printing press, and even demonstrations of things like rope making. The result is stepping into a time capsule of the heyday of the whaling era. Most of the buildings are authentically from the 1800s, including some that have been moved onto the grounds from other locations in the northeast. The amount of care that went into that architecture is wild. Mystic Seaport Museum is a snapshot of a moment in time, a look back at the era of whaling, and a reality check of just how recently that era faded into the past. Even at a fast pace this place has hours of enjoyment for everyone.
If you are in cape cod area and have an interest in healing bring your family here. You will never see such a collection anywhere else in the world and at the value these fetch there will never be a bigger collection built. Just the accessories made of whale bone were extensive but there was an endless number of incredible scrimshaw teeth by all of the best known artists of the whaling period. It has to be the largest single collection in the world. I’m a fan and fairly knowledgeable and have seen what I suspected was the largest collection in the world this is even bigger. The piece de resistance for this museum the scrimshaw room.
PLASTER FUN TIME NORTH READING MA FULL
It includes four full whale skeletons (including sadly a baby) and a plethora of whaling artifacts. Clean and expansive with incredible artwork and artifacts. Just down the road a bit from mystic seaport and the whaling ships this place is a must see. The town is amazingly cute and the museum is easily the best I’ve ever seen. Stopped here by chance when driving by and couldn’t be happier.
